How are enclosures tested for water resistance against rain, splashes and submersion?

Short answer

We test our enclosures in our certified laboratory to the ingress protection (IP) standards outlined in EN 60529, using a different method for each rating. To test splash resistance (IPX4) we simulate water sprayed from all directions and confirm that everything inside stays dry. For higher protection levels we submerge the enclosures: IPX7 is tested at a depth of 1 metre for 30 minutes, while IPX8 is tested at even greater depths and durations, depending on the specific requirements. These tests confirm performance against rain, pressure washers and submersion.

We test our enclosures rigorously in our certified laboratory to meet the ingress protection (IP) standards outlined in EN 60529. Protection is the main purpose of an enclosure, and that often means protection from water as well as from knocks and bumps. Water resistance is a top priority for many of our customers, so we go the extra mile to make sure our enclosures provide reliable protection.

We use a range of test methods depending on the IP rating we are assessing:

  • For splash resistance (IPX4), we simulate water sprayed from all directions to confirm the enclosure keeps everything inside dry.

  • For IPX7, enclosures are submerged and tested at a depth of 1 metre for 30 minutes.

  • For IPX8, enclosures are tested at even greater depths and durations, depending on the specific requirements.

These tests help us ensure that our enclosures perform as promised in real-world conditions, whether they are exposed to rain, pressure washers or submersion.
