Can an electrical enclosure be fully submerged in water?

Short answer

An enclosure can be fully submerged if it carries an ingress protection rating of IP68, which covers continuous immersion in water at depths of more than one metre. Our Abox XT junction boxes are made from robust polycarbonate and use double-membrane seals, and each is supplied with a bag of cast resin, a funnel, ventilation seals and disposable gloves so the connection clamps can be sealed. The range has been tested by submersion for 168 hours at water depths of up to 15 metres in line with DIN EN 60529, and is certified to DIN VDE V 0606-22-100.

For full submersion, an enclosure needs an ingress protection (IP) rating of IP68, as products with this rating can withstand continuous immersion in water at a depth of more than one metre. Preventing water ingress is a must to protect the electrical equipment within and ultimately ensure its correct functioning, and it is particularly important where the housing is installed in harsh environmental conditions, such as high-risk flood areas, ports or washing facilities.

To provide a reliable solution for these applications, we developed the Abox XT range of junction boxes. They are made of robust polycarbonate, which is anti-shock, impact-resistant and weatherproof, and they feature double-membrane seals to protect against water ingress. Each product comes with a bag of cast resin, a funnel, ventilation seals and a pair of disposable gloves. Using these, you can seal the connection clamps and further enhance the waterproof capabilities of the enclosure. Once applied, the resin can be easily removed and re-inserted, which simplifies reinstallation.

The Abox XT series has been tested by submerging the enclosures for 168 hours at water depths of up to 15 metres, in accordance with the DIN EN 60529 standard on IP protection classes. The system is also certified to DIN VDE V 0606-22-100, the regulations covering boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories for household and similar fixed electrical installations.
